Bans on School Junk Food Pay Off in California
The May 8 edition of the New York Times had an article on the positive effect that the modest changes in school food have had on children's calorie consumption. Since 2007 California school have not only banned soda, but many unhealthy snack foods from the vending machines and other places for sale on campuses. As a result, California children consume, on average, 158 fewer calories per day than students in other states. Apparently they are not eating more outside of school. 158 calories is about the equivalent of a small bag of potato chips. This can be enough to avoid long-term weight gain.
