A large study with over 30,000 participants already suffering from cardiovascular disease and published in the journal Circulation showed that a good diet can improve outcomes. This large study was conducted in 12 different countries on people who were appropriately medicated for their condition. The researchers found that those who adhered more closely to a Mediterranean diet: high intake of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and fish, low amounts of meat and eggs, reduced the relative risk of cardiovascular death by 35%, myocardial infarction by 14%, stroke by 19%, and congestive heart failure (CHF) by 28% compared to those eating the poorest diet.
The bottom line is that it never hurts to eat right, even if you're on medication. The medication does not allow you to eat poorly. Some people think they can have a meal rich in butter and red meat because they're on statins anyway. This is not the case.
