The November 2012 issue of The Lancet had the results of a large study conducted over 10 years at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Washinton, D.C. The authors found that physical fitness boosted survival in patients on statins by up to 70%. The most fit participants with hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) had a reduction in all-cause mortality of 60-70% compared to the least fit. Not only do those people taking statins who exercise benefit, but even those choosing not to take statins still had a 50% reduction in all-cause mortality if they exercised vigorously and regularly. Cholesterol is not the main player in cardiovascular disease. It only seems that way because there are pills available that can lower it. Ultimately you want to improve the health of your arteries and heart, not achieve some lab value. Exercise will help you maintain or achieve healthy arteries regardless of your cholesterol status.
