Losing Fitness over a Decade Doubles Risk of Death

A Finnish study presented in November 2012 at the American Heart Association 2012 Scientific Sessions showed that Finnish men who lost more than 15% of their cardiorespiratory fitness over a 10-year period fast a near doubling of their risk of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) over the next decade and over twice the risk of dying of any cause. The men who were studies were between 42 and 60. During that period it would be quite easy to reduce fitness by 15% and one has to make a concerted effort to remain as fit. If you don't work at it, it will disappear far more quickly than in young people.
