A study published in Evidence Based Medicine in 2012 that reviewed 4 meta-analyses found that antibiotics provide only the barest minimum of benefit over a placebo in acute sinusitis. However, unlike the placebo, antibiotics had more adverse events, such as diarrhea, which was reported in 30-74% of patients. Like my previous report on coughing and antibiotics, it might be time to rethink automatically giving antibiotics to patients with sinus infections.
