A study published in the November 2012 issue of Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association found that physical activity can protect against vascular dementia and cognitive impairment in non-disabled individuals ages 65-84 with some loss of brain white matter. For the purposes of this study, physical activity was considered moderate activity for 30 minutes 3 times a week. The people in this study were evaluated over a three year period of time. There is no downside to exercising as we age.
