Processed Meat and Cancer Deaths

The March 7 online edition of BMC Medicine published one of the largest studies to look at processed meat consumption and mortality. The news was not good for those who enjoy bacon, sausage, and ham. There was a positive association between processed meat consumption and an increased risk of death from both cardiovascular causes and cancer. Over a 12 year period of time the risk of death was twice as high for those with high consumption compared to those with low consumption. The risk for cancer death was 43% higher and the risk for cardiovascular death was 70% higher in people eating more than 160 g/day of processed meats than in those eating 10.0-19.9 g/day. These data come from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study invovling 10 countries and almost half a million men and women.
