Calcium, Vitamin D, and Hip Fracture

The Women's Health Initiative was the largest randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial using 1000 mg of elemental calcium given as calcium carbonate along with 400 IU of vitamin D3. When the results were first published in 2006 the headlines read that calcium and vitamin D do not prevent hip fracture. That is because not everyone took the supplements. A new analysis looked at only those women who took the supplements and combined the results with the WHI prospective observational study, the researchers found that there was actually a 38% lower risk of hip fracture in those women who took the supplement at least 80% of the time. That is significant risk reduction. Interestingly, the researchers found no increase in cardiovascular disease, a concern in some other studies. A recent study found that the increased risk may just be in men, not women. Regardless, it isn't time to throw away your calcium supplements. I generally have women taking around 600 mg of calcium citrate along with at least 300 mg of magnesium and 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 along with vitamin K2.
