Fish Oil and Heart Health

There has been a lot of misinformation or poor information recently about fish oil and heart disease. An observational longitudinal study involving 5, 201 adults older than 65 and published in the April 2, 2013 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine showed that higher blood levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), as are found in fish oil, were correlated with a 27% lower risk of all-cause mortality. Most of the benefit was due to reduced risk of cardiovascular death. The rate of arrhythmic death fell by nearly one half. Other studies have shown that omega-3 PUFA intake benefits heart rate, blood pressure, strength of the heart muscle, electrical stability of the heart, as well as the health of the blood vessels. Those with the highest levels could expect to live about 2.2 years longer than those with the lowest levels. The authors also recommend formulas that have both DHA and EPA, and not just EPA alone. Another study found that the form of omega-3 PUFA found in prescription fish oil is inferior to the over-the-counter version used by many nutriceutical companies, such as Nordic Naturals.
