A Japanese study published online March 14 in Stroke found that drinking coffee and green tea resulted in a lower incidence of stroke. While this is good news, one needs to pay attention to the details. Those drinking green tea drank 2-4 cups of green tea per day. Those in the highest coffee drinking group drank 2-3 cups of coffee per day. An earlier Swedish study found an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in those who drank more than 7 cups of coffee a day. Like with most things, coffee is probably not harmful, and probably helpful if you drink one to two cups per day. Much above that and it is probably more harmful than helpful. Green tea is probably more effective in higher doses than at low doses. And as with everything, having a underlying diet rich in fruits and vegetables, along with healthy fats and good sources of protein are essential for good vascular health.
