Walking, Chemotherapy, and Colorectal Cancer

A study published in the January issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology studied a cohort of 2,293 colorectal cancer patients at baseline and then 16 years later. The researchers found that those people who engaged in about 150 minutes of exercise a week after diagnosis resulted in cutting the risk of dying from colorectal cancer in half. These are better than the odds from chemotherapy. This is not to say don't undergo chemotherapy, but is saying that you should at least walk 30 minutes a day whether or not you undergo chemotherapy. On the other hand, spending  6 or more hours per day of leisure time sitting compared to fewer than 3 hours per day was associated with a higher all-cause mortality.
