Citrus Fruit May Reduce Stroke Risk
There has been some discussion on whether or not vitamin C helps to prevent strokes. Some studies have suggested this, but this latest study published in the February 23 issue of Stroke suggests that another compound in citrus fruit prevents strokes. Using data from the very large Nurses' Health Study, the researchers found a correlation between flavanone, an antioxidant compound found in oranges, grapefruit, and other citrus fruits, and stroke reduction. This finding also points out one of the difficulties in nutrition research. Food contains many molecules, not just protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals. Strokes are reduced in people eating a citrus regularly. Is this from vitamin C or something else? This study found that it is the antioxidant, flavanone.
