Macular Degeneration Prevalence Increases Dramatically With Age

After age 50, the risk for Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) quadruples every decade, so by age 90 the risk for AMD is 20%. There is also a small genetic component to AMD. It is a good idea for everyone over 70 to get screened for AMD, and those with a family history will probably want to start earlier. The study on the incidence of AMD was published in the March issue of Ophthalmology.
