Junk Food Linked to Depression

That headline should come as no surprise! This Spanish study followed 8964 adults starting in 1999. At the outside no one had been diagnosed with depression. After a median follow-up of 6.2 years, it was found that those with the highest levels of consumption of fast food (pizza, hamburgers, and even baked goods such as donuts, croissants) were significantly more at risk for depression. Even at small doses there was a risk, and the risk increased with the more fast food that was consumed. Previous research has found similar results and also found trans-fatty acids to be associated with depression. This study was published in the March Public Health Nutrition.
