Here is one of those disturbing articles that was published in the May 15 edition of Environmental Health Perspectives. Arsenic has been found to be carcinogenic and its content in food is not currently regulated by the FDA. Arsenic is found naturally in certain foods, in particular rice, and more so in brown rice than in white rice. Many organic foods, including baby foods, use organic brown rice syrup (OBRS) as a sweetener in place of high fructose corn syrup. This study found that the amount of arsenic in OBRS may be too high, especially for children. In general it is always better to eat whole foods, not processed foods, even if they are organic. Getting your "sweet fix" from fresh cherries is better than from an organic bar made with OBRS.
