A recent study published in the International Journal of Obesity looked at adult short sleepers, or those who sleep fewer than 6 hours per night. A group of short sleepers were asked to increase their sleep to 7-8 hours/night, while another group maintained their 6 hours per night. After 6 years, those short sleepers who had lengthened their sleep to a normal 7-8 hours had gained less overall weight and less fat, or about 5 fewer pounds of fat over that period of time. A control group who normally slept 7-8 hours at night also did not gain as much weight. As I've mentioned in previous posts, sleep is more and more being recognized for its importance in maintaining good health.
