An Australian study recently posed on the British Medical Journal site, looked at the cost effectiveness of daily dark chocolate consumption by people with metabolic syndrome in reducing cardiovascular events. This study used computer modeling to calculate the cost effectiveness over a ten year period of time, as most studies on dark chocolate are of shorter duration. They found that the blood pressure and cholesterol lowering effects of dark chocolate consumption help prevent cardiovascular events in people with metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes having some or all of these: high cholesterol, low HDL, high LDL, central obesity, high blood pressure, high triglycerides). They found dark chocolate to be cost effective. While eating dark chocolate daily is healthy, people with metabolic syndrome still need to watch how many calories they consume and not just add in dark chocolate to the mix. Dark chocolate does contribute to satiety, another beneficial effect. Also, compliance is not usually an issue here!
