A Canadian study presented at the American Society of Hypertension 2012 Scientific Sessions found that a comprehensive stress reduction program did lower blood pressure but not significantly. Patients were taught yoga, stress-reduction techniques, and guided imagery with the intention of bringing mindfulness to their daily activities. Previous research on medicated patients did show benefit to these techniques. Perhaps these techniques augmented what the medication started? Or maybe when people are less stressed they are more likely to take their medication? Or maybe there were other factors related to the location of the program, the people running the program that made a difference. Or maybe some people respond to this kind of therapy and others don't. Since these techniques would not have adverse side effects, I think further research would be helpful.
