IBS and Gut Bacteria

Our guts contain 3-5 pounds of bacteria, which are vital to our health and well-being. People with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) have long been suspected of having a condition known as Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth or SIBO. A recent study performed at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles used small bowel cultures to confirm the presence of SIBO in patients with IBS. One way of treating this overgrowth is with an antibiotic that only effects gut bacteria and is not absorbed through the gut wall: rifaximin. Several factors can lead to SIBO including using proton-pump inhibitors (such as Prilosec, Nexium, Prevacid) and a high simple carbohydrate diet. Re-establishing healthy gut flora is also important.
