A Brazilian study published in the July issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that unless a person exercises regularly after liposuction, he or she will gain visceral or abdominal fat. Subcutaneous fat is seen as less inflammatory and thus less dangerous than visceral or abdominal fat, which produces many inflammatory hormones. Visceral fat is associated with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and heart disease. This study involved 36 women who underwent small-volume liposuction of the abdomen. Half of the women participated in a 4 month exercise program starting two months after surgery. They exercised 3 times a week, including strength training and up to 40 minutes on the treadmill. After 6 months the women who did not exercise showed a 10% increase in visceral fat. The idea that you would gain back fat after liposuction unless you change your diet and exercise habits makes perfect sense. What is particularly interesting with this study is that the fat you regain would primarily be abdominal fat.
