Male Cyclists Beware of Chamois Cream

The UCLA School of Nursing conducted a study on male leisure cyclists, triathletes, and recreational athletes. The leisure cyclists were found to have significantly higher levels of estradiol and somewhat higher levels of testosterone than the recreational athletes. Higher levels of estradiol and other estrogens lead to gynecomastia, or male breasts. An interesting finding was an association between increased years of using chamois cream and increased levels of estrogen. About 48.5% of the cyclists used chamois cream. Many chamois creams use parabens, which are estrogenic, as preservatives. This study was also unusual, as it showed a down-side to serious exercise. Perhaps changing the type of chamois cream will mitigate this effect.
