A new study published in the journal Obesity has found that higher blood levels of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), a persistent organic pollutant (POP), are associated with increased abdominal or visceral fat. Visceral fat is more inflammatory and has more serious health consequences than subcutaneous fat. It is also associated with diabetes. Previous studies have shown that PCBs are associated with the development of diabetes. PCBs were used in electronic equipment until their production was banned in the US in 1979. However, since they are persistent, and found in landfills, which can seep into groundwater, they are still with us. The best we can do is be aware and support any effort to clean up any sort of pollution.
