Piperine, a component of black pepper, has been shown in the lab to inhibit the formation of fat cells. There is not way to tell from this information if eating foods with black pepper will make you less fat than foods without black pepper. And how much black pepper does it take? What does make this interesting is that this is another study showing that gaining weight is more complex than calories eaten/calories burned. That is the big picture, and this picture can be modified by what you're actually eating.
As a side note, the spice turmeric, which has been shown to be a terrific anti-inflammatory agent, is absorbed better with black pepper.
