In Functional Medicine we look at stress as a toxin and having toxic effects on the body. A recent study published online Lune 18 in the Canadian Medical Association Journal Sciences (CMAJ) found that psychological distress may be linked to increased mortality from cerebrovascular disease (stroke) and coronary artery disease. The primary forms of psychological distress that were studied were depression, sleep disturbance, and anxiety. Those people with stress had a 66% increased risk of death from stroke and a 59% increased risk of death from heart disease. This study looked at data from 68,652 mainly white adults participating in the Health Survey for England study. The participants were followed from an average of 8.1 years. There are many functional medicine tools available to deal with depression, sleep disturbance, and anxiety that don't involve drugs.
