Memory and Jogging

The May 30 New York Times had an interesting article on jogging and memory. Describing a study published last month in Neuroscience researchers at Dartmouth found that for most people regular exercise does improve memory. Exercising the morning of a memory test further improves the memory in those already exercising. However, there is a subgroup of people whose memory is not improved by exercise: those people who genetically don't increase their production of brain derived neurotropic hormone (BDNF) in response to exercise. This test is not available commercially yet, and does affect about 30% of European Caucasians.
