Fructose, Fish Oil and the Brain

A study conducted at UCLA and published in the May 1 issue of Journal of Physiology found that, at least in rats, a diet high in fructose impairs cognitive function. This can be reversed with a high intake of omega-3 fatty acids, in particular  decosahexanoic acid (DHA). Apparently high fructose consumption can disrupt signaling of the insulin receptors in the brain and reduce the action of insulin in the brain. DHA is able to protect the brain from the adverse effects of high fructose consumption causing poor learning. Dr. Gomez-Pinilla, the main researcher, said he now plans to study how omega-3 fatty acids can be of benefit in certain brain disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study should be one more reason not to drink liquids high in fructose, which include sodas AND fruit juices. If you're going to drink fruit juice, thin it with water.
