Compared to relaxation training, 5 days of being trained in and then practicing integrative body-mind training (IBMT), a type of Chinese mindfulness meditation, induced positive structural changes in the brain's white matter. The study subjects also showed improved mood changes. The axonal and myelin changes occurred in the anterior cingulate part of the brain, a region that is implicated in self-regulation. Deficits in this area have been linked to, not surprisingly, addiction, ADHD, depression, schizophrenia, and dementia. Whether the same effects are seen with other types of meditation is not known. This study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science online June 11, 2012.
